Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Honored by UH System Board of Regents

University of Houston–Clear Lake Program Recognized for Excellence

The University of Houston System Board of Regents presented the inaugural Regents’ Academic Excellence Award to the University of Houston–Clear Lake (UHCL) Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (CADD).  The award recognizes University of Houston System institutions’ programs and initiatives that exemplify excellence in teaching, research and/or public service.

“One in every 68 children is diagnosed with autism, including more than 89,000 children in Texas, and it is now recognized as the number one health issue with children,” said Dorothea C. Lerman, UHCL CADD director.  “We’re hoping to make a huge difference in the lives of these families by conducting research, training current and future professionals, and through providing services to help families in our community.”

The Center has been extremely productive and has helped improve the lives of hundreds of children and adults in Houston.  Research begun at CADD has been presented at international conferences and recognized for innovation and excellence.

“CADD was selected because of their quality research and impact on autism and developmental disabilities, the cutting edge training of current and future professionals, and the critical and cutting edge services they provide to children and their families,” said Paula Myrick Short, University of Houston System senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.  “Since the inception of the Center, 700 families have been served, more than 300 professionals have been trained, and more than 60 research projects have been initiated.”

“Through our research, training and service, we are striving to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by this disorder and those who care about them,” Lerman said.

UH System Board of Regents Chair Tilman J. Fertitta and University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator presented the Regents' Award to UHCL President William A. Staples and Lerman during the August 20 Board meeting.
